Just before you pack for your summer holidays, or order a film or TV box set from a certain online DVD store. This post may just change your life. Behind the published blogging scenes, I’ve been conferring with the lovely blogger Erica from Poppity Talks Classic Film about running a joint blogathon this year.

After a wee bit of deliberation, we’ve now one in the pipeline for a special anniversary next year. But first of all, coming soon (cue drum roll) to the blogosphere this October we are hosting a blogathon on the actress and writer Shelley Winters.

Shelley Winters was seen and heard on the big and wee screen for six decades and seen in over 100 films of every genre. She appeared in as diverse genres as horror such as Whoever Slew Auntie Roo? (1971), film noir such as He Ran All the Way (1951) and Westerns such as Winchester ’73 (1950). This multi-talented actress even appeared in the superhero Batman (1966) TV Series.

Her career started with an uncredited role at 23 in a romantic drama to her final role at 79 years in an Italian comedy. Shelley had a hugely fantastic on-screen acting career working with directors such as Blake Edwards, Roger Corman, Stanley Kubrick, George Cukor and George Stevens.

During her illustrious film career, Winters won two Oscars for Best Supporting Actress in The Diary of Anne Frank (1959) and Best Actress for A Patch of Blue (1965). She was also nominated for two more Oscars for her appearances in The Poseidon Adventure (1972) where she earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination and a Best Actress nomination for A Place in the Sun (1951). She was nominated six times for Emmy Awards in a wide variety of categories. Her TV roles included The Love Boat (1982), Hotel  (1984), Kojak (1978) and Roseanne (1991-96).

Off-screen, she was heard on the radio and she was seen on stage on Broadway in A Hatful of Rain and in The Night Before Christmas. With her wonderful stirring quote on her experience of theatre;

Every now and then, when you’re on stage, you hear the best sound a player can hear. It’s a sound you can’t get in movies or in television. It is the sound of a wonderful, deep silence that means you’ve hit them where they live.

Personally, I always remembered her in her Academy Award nominated role as a passenger on a doomed cruise, as Belle Rosen. This – of course – was in the all-star cast of the disaster film, The Poseidon Adventure (1972). This is a Christmas telly staple (and favourite) with her fellow cast members including Gene Hackman, Pamela Sue Martin, Ernest Borgnine and many, many more.

Other movies I’ve enjoyed with this lovely lady include her with leading men including Michael Caine in Alfie (1966), Telly Savalas in Buona Sera Mrs Campbell (1968) and James Mason in Lolita (1962). Her lengthy list of co-stars includes everyone and anyone from Chuck Norris to Ricardo Montalban and actresses including Elizabeth Taylor, Julie Andrews and Bette Davis.

She was regarded as a witty author writing two frank and candid autobiographies. These tell all books were Shelley: Also known as Shirley (1980) and Shelley II: The Middle of My Century (1989). Wikipedia adds this quote from the Associated Press on this actress;

She delighted in giving provocative interviews and seemed to have an opinion on everything

So with this fantastic array of treasures of all sorts from this actress, the lovely Erica and I are inviting you all to our wee blogathon celebrating her career. Those all important dates are the 1st to 3rd of October this year.

You are welcome to review anything about this multi-award winning lady in her work as an actress in film or TV, on stage or on the radio or her work as an author. However, we are insisting that no derogatory posts regarding any of her appearances (including chat shows) or posts about this actress and her life off-screen are submitted.
