BLOGATHON… Announcing The Great Muppet Guest Star Caper (Blogathon)

It’s time to raise the curtain on the Muppet Show blogathon tonight with the spotlight on their very special guest stars…

In the first of my joint blogathons of 2023, I am joined by Rebecca from Taking Up Room, a show load of Muppets and your very special Guest Star choice.

Everyone has a favourite Muppet, be it that wee green frog, Kermit or his on-off girlfriend – and diva – Miss Piggy, the comic Fozzie Bear or even Gonzo, the reporter bird-thing (?). The Muppet Show (1976-81) was a show within a show that starred a zillion of these puppet icons. This children’s variety programme consisted of sketches, musical numbers, crazy humour and the Muppets’ behind-the-scenes dramas. And they were joined every week by one of 139 guest stars from the world of acting and music, who joined in the mayhem.

The Muppets were created by Jim Henson originally for Sesame Street (1969). Henson then invented more Muppets and pitched The Muppet Show, in a bid to become known as more than a children’s entertainer. It wasn’t taken up as a series after two pilots, and then was made surprisingly in Borehamwood in England, and is now part of the legacy of Lew Grade. Henson collaborated with the British Frank Oz who added many of the voices, and Oz was also known as the voice of Yoda, he was.

Back in the 1970s, my sisters and I avidly watched The Muppet Show every week. I enjoyed its parodies and sketches such as Pigs in Space, The Swedish Chef and Veterinarian’s Hospital. On a childhood visit to a pantomime in Glasgow with our Gran, we shared the Royal box with those elderly critics, Statler and Waldorf. Looking back on it now it was most probably Statler and Waldorf with Scottish accents, but we were starstruck (and a wee bit disillusioned as we discovered they were really puppets) for the first time.

Our topic is (cue trumpet), those Muppet Celebrity Guest Stars. Rebecca from Taking Up Room is my partner on this topic in our annual joint blogathon we are running early next year. Don’t worry if like me you don’t remember any of the guest stars, apart from Mark Hamill – looking at you Darlin Husband – as I will be adding a link or two which lead to a list of these big names later in this post.

You have 5 seasons with 139 guest stars to choose from… these names include actors Roger Moore, Dudley Moore, Peter Ustinov and John Cleese and actresses such as Lynda Carter, Loretta Swit, Candice Bergen and Nancy Walker. There are also many musicians who appeared as Guest Stars who may or may not have starred on the big or wee screen. So get researching if you want to write us an out-the-box review… and if you have any doubts about a review topic let us know…

The Great Muppet Guest Star Caper Blogathon will be held from January 30th to 1st February 2023. The good news is, you can review your chosen guest star in any of their film or TV appearances… But it comes with a BIG catch, and you guessed it… we are not allowing any duplicates for guest stars.

PLEASE note that you can also review films or TV previously chosen with a different The Muppet Show guest star who is also in the same movie. For example, we will accept Marisa Berenson, Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey from three different bloggers with their three different review takes on Cabaret (1972)…

Here are the rules…

  • We are not allowing any guest star duplicates as this topic is pretty huge. You can however write about those review topics previously mentioned but only if it is a different guest star who also appears in the movie or TV show.
  • Review choices can be added as a comment on this page or you can contact me on my Contact Me page  – please add the name of your blog along with your choice of movie or TV choice. Or you can contact Rebecca at Taking Up Room HERE
  • We won’t accept posts that are uncomplimentary or disrespectful.
  • You can only add two posts for the blogathon.
  • Add your Twitter username so we can promote your post.
  • A full list of blogs and review choices will be posted on a separate page and updated regularly.
  • Only original and never before published posts will be accepted.
  • Send the link to your post link to Rebecca or me on the days of the blogathon.
  • Note we will be publishing all the links on both my WordPress blog and Rebecca’s on each day of the blogathon, this may be on different days due to those different time zones! But your link will be published on both of our blogs.
  • We are not accepting derogatory posts.
  • Do give a second choice of a guest star if you have one, just in case your choice is taken.. and add your choice to both our blogs. Timing is crucial…

My and Rebecca’s choices…

Gill at Realweegiemidget Reviews… Mark Hamill starring in Village of the Damned (1995)
