So at the moment, the film blogging world is crazily tagging each other to find out just what movies we hate. With two of my fellow Entertainment bloggers, tagging me and others to tell all.  I will hopefully not get any repercussions from remembering those movies from Hell.. but bizarrely thanks to my fellow Reel Quirky Cat, Cat at Thoughts All Sorts and Richard at The Humpo Show for tagging me as it appears you can be tagged more than once. And here’s more on the rules…

And you lucky tagged people will be mentioned later but first to those movies…

Only three films are allowed which means I can’t pick all the films by a certain “actor” whose work I avoid like the plague. In fact, if it came to the choice of seeing just one of his movies or the plague, I’d easily take to my bed as long as I wasn’t inflicted to his movies on a loop like that meme from A Clockwork Orange (1971).

 

Vacation (2015)…

Great cast, shame about the movie. I loved the National Lampoon’s Vacation franchise as a teen. Even though I didn’t understand all the jokes back then. Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold had wonderful on-screen chemistry with his on-screen wife, Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo). He was the dad to end all dads to Rusty and Audrey. On the big screen as he took his family on adventures to Walley World – National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983) –  and Europe – National Lampoons European Vacation (1985) these usually had a fair share of comic results.

Sadly, this fun original was turned into a “comedy” with some great stars – cast agent’s remake favourite cast member (possibly to distract you its a remake), Chris Hemsworth’s part as an in-law stole the show – but was sadly an awfully predictable mess with unfunny consequences to the setup scenes. Almost like it was written by 9-year-old boys with no sense of humour. I would go on but you are probably better at reading my rant HERE. In full.  

And please if you have to do a sequel, scrap Rusty’s annoying family and get back to basics. A holiday with grandparents Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo, as Clark and Ellen is the perfect getaway, from this start to the rebooted franchise…

 

Watership Down (1978)…

I HATE this film so much, that I’m not putting a trailer up (read on to see why) so if you really want to check it out, I suggest you try that video sharing site. So instead added pictures of some slightly less disturbing – admittedly not by much – actors as bunny rabbits. I saw this film at the cinema with it having a rating of a U for Universal ie kids could see it (on their own if they wanted which they shouldn’t and wouldn’t) – which was wrong from the start. Even my mother was taken in by this misleading guidance rating.

The film tells the Watership Down story about some wee (in the film cartoon) rabbits who journey to Watership Down to live a happy life as they escape from their warren. The reason for this for some reason, that I don’t remember. Not sure of the whole of the story, as blanked from my mind  40 and a bit years later. On the way, more than a few of them die in really grisly ways on-screen. With cartoon blood. But it’s actually full of stuff that gave me nightmares for weeks as a wee 8 going on a 9-year-old girl. It still gives me nightmares and I still can’t watch it or listen to the film soundtrack.

 

The Notebook (2004)…

Moving swiftly on, another film I hate is this Nicholas Sparks, by the numbers, contrived film romance. It’s not the casting.  I love Rachel McAdams as I loved her in About Time (2013) – review HERE – and even Morning Glory (2010) – a review of which will come when my obsession with blogathons wears off.

I confess Ryan Gosling has kinda gone up in my estimations after Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011) and La La Land  (2016). But not in a Leonardo DiCaprio kinda way. Basically, James Garner is the best thing about this movie. Closely followed by Sam Shepard, an actor who could do no wrong until this…

It tells of an elderly man (Garner) telling his wife how they met and fell in love, and she’s got dementia so she doesn’t remember it is her until much later in the movie. As its film dementia, and therefore loosely based on the real thing.

And it’s contrived by the numbers, he’s Noah, she’s Allie. he’s rich, she’s poor. Meet in a contrived way with an OTT plot for the star-crossed lovers. Banned from seeing each other by her parents, his father cooler. He writes. She doesn’t get the letters as her mother has been secreting them away. She meets a lovely bloke. He makes her dream house. She finds out he sent letters, and the mother admits what she did…and gives her ALL of them. (Luckily not narrated for the entire 365 days he wrote them). But her mum once dated a poor man too. Reconciliation with Noah, soft-focus sex and… Yawn.

Sorry, but if you are having a contrived romance movie night, admittedly only your granny would like THIS as the movie to watch.. otherwise watch that much better, more romantic movie Deadpool (2016) you know it makes sense. And who knows Granny might like that nice Mr Reynolds.
