Marvel with the man not just of many, many cameos…
Recalling the man who put Super into Superheroes, in front of and behind the camera, Stan Lee.
Stan Lee’s work always make me smile, and it’s not just his wee cameos in Marvel Movies that are wonderful. With the most accomplished CV that I’ve seen not just in front of the screen but behind it too with Lee working as a creator, writer, producer and with many, many more roles. His cameos making him unique as the only actor appearing in all those Marvel movies we’ve seen in the last 10 years…
His cameos are like being an Scottish expat in Finland – ie yours truly and no doubt others – and finding a bar of British chocolate in the flat that you’d inadvertently neglected. Or getting my regular chocolate parcel with a couple of bars of a certain kind of chocolate from my one time Reel Quirky Cats collaborator in the post. Lee’s appearances always like the cream at the top of the milk, as anyone my age from the UK who remembers milkmen do. Especially if your milkman was Sean Connery in Edinburgh back in the day.
So I was upset to learn of the man behind Marvel, the passionate and fabulous Stan Lee passing away recently. My tribute to him is just a few of those blink and miss ’em film cameos where he made his mark in a movie. In no particular order. And with no spoilers as to the plot of these films… just where to spot him! So it could be a case of watch, pause, repeat as you look out for those cameos..
But first a wee bit from Stan Lee from his masterclass on cameos… to a few recognisable faces…

“one of the most colorful men of our time: an inventor, an adventurer, a multimillionaire, a ladies man, and finally, a nutcase.”
Thor Ragnarok (2017)
Thor Ragnarok : Stan Lee Cuts Thor Hair Scene | Thor”NO NOoOo”!!! | Thor Ragnarok 2018, Movie Nation
On seeing the trailer for Thor Ragnarok I did wonder just who was responsible for Thor’s haircut. Then I discovered Stan Lee as the barber who cuts Thor’s hair. Giving him a mum cut to die for, Not the only one who was sad seeing Hemsworth’s lovely golden locks lying on the floor. I do hope this haircut grows out in time for the next Untitled Marvel Movie with those original Avengers. But in the meantime look out for Stan in those Sakaar scenes… in this another of Stan Lee’s co-creations.

OK, I’ll admit it on seeing this particular after the credits scene it went over my little head. So Darlin Husband mansplained – of should that be Marvel-splained it to me as he does when I don’t get a Marvel reference. The weird-looking aliens or extra terrestriasl are The Watchers who watch whats happening on Earth. Here, in this movie they have the company of Stan Lee, as himself, the Marvel creator this movie. With Stan Lee explaining whats happening in the MCU…. in relation to his adventures in his cameos and mentioning those superheroes. Lee reappears in an after credits scene being left to fend for himself in on the Moon by those Watchers. The Watchers also co- created by Stan Lee also appear in other Marvel movies.

Stan Lee cameo’s were always something I looked forward to in the Marvel movies. This to see the man enjoying his wee 5 minutes of fame in the movie he’d worked on behind the scenes or inspired. I enjoyed those cameos so much so that when watching Dr Strange (2016) at home – as I’m not the he biggest fan of the two leading stars – I watched up until the must watch Stan Lee’s regular cameo. We then
inevitably fastforwarded to the bit with lovely Chris Helmsworth. And then Darlin Husband mansplained the rest of the plot. Thus making the soon to be reviewed Avengers: Infinity War (2018) movie make a lot more sense.
These cameos I’ll miss and I’m hoping the men and women at Marvel wont re-edit his previous appearances in film and TV to make a brand new cameo. Or worst still bring Stan Lee back in CGI. And instead let us enjoy the many. many appearances, his writing, work as a producer and his many more roles behind the big and wee screen. This including working as a DJ in a strip bar in Deadpool (2016) and a jury member in The Trial of the Incredible Hulk (1989). And to revisit and re-enjoy his illustrious and marvel-lous career. And those parts we’ve blinked and missed, as my number 1 question after avoiding a Marvel movie production (for fair means or foul ) is “What did Stan Lee do?” It seems quite a bit.
