Special Correspondents (2016).

Trailer Time No 4

The News from Abroad.. or is it?

If you always thought about a radio career reporting the news from a war torn country, Ricky Gervais and Eric Bana show you how not to…

Special Correspondents – Official Trailer – Netflix [HD], Netflix US & Canada, http://www.youtube.com and phtographs © Netflix.

A reader in the good ol’ US of A requested I review the trailer for Special Correspondents (2016), a new comedy film starring Ricky Gervais and Eric Bana. The trailer starts with Bana’s journalist’s character Frank Bonneville’s voice describing the scene of his report from an uprising in Ecuador in South America. Listening to his touching concern for the inhabitants, his colleagues listen to the radio report in silence. We then cut to him and sound engineer Finch (Ricky Gervais) where Finch turns to him and talks of all the fringe benefits they have of good food and drink and apparent safety. Finch then discloses the bombshell they are in New York and faking the broadcast from their accomodation.. based literally 5 minutes walk from the aforementioned radio station. To make trouble worse, there is growing concern for these heroes – even an appeal to help them is made for them on television – and their safety in Ecuador. It is believed they have gone missing there.. This leads to Bonneville and Finch having to go to Ecuador for real…or face the consequences.

This comedy was directed by Gervais and based on a French film of the same name, Envoyés Très Spéciaux (2009). I’m hoping as Special Correspondents was also written by Gervais that it will lead to many laugh aloud moments. He always makes me laugh when he is compere of the Golden Globes with his wee friendly jibes at actors and actresses. There he makes fun of the rich and famous with wee in jokes at his celebrity audience. He has a lovely way of making the point, yet almost borderline offensive which leads him to returning annually, now a date which I always keep in my diary. He also ridicules himself with his commentary. I keep hoping that he will show up at the Oscars to inject more humour there. I’ve only seen Bana as Henry VIII in the photogenically enhanced tale of the Tudor king, The Other Boleyn Girl (2008). There he had  the enviable role of being in love with two sisters Anne and Mary Boleyn, played by Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson respectively. In light of this, this would have added a strange dimension had he continued his role as the Hulk alongside future love interest Johannsson Black Widow in the Avengers films. That is if you are like me and find it difficult to see actors and actresses playing lovers in different films. Such as the pairing of Ewan McGregor and Renee Zellweger in Down with Love (2003) and Miss Potter (2006). Or Molly Ringwald who played opposite Andrew McCarthy as her love interest both in Pretty in Pink (1986) and Fresh Horses (1988). Special Correspondents also stars Kelly Macdonald, Benjamin Bratt, America Ferrara, Vera Farmiga and Kevin Pollak.

In this movie, Gervais and Bana appear a mismatched pair and at times a bromance in the trailer. As a mismatched pair Bana often appears the straight man to Gervais’ s comedian. This pairing reminded me a wee bit of Steve Martin and John Candy’s roles in Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987). You get the feeling that Finch will become an irritating travel partner in their trip to Ecuador if not before, leading to some funny and random humour from Gervais in his own unique style. Yet at some level you feel there is a bond between the men, and a rapport as seen in bromances such as between Marky Mark Wahlberg’s character in Ted (2012) and the randomness of the friendships bewtten the guys in The Inbetweeners (2008-10). The film is described by Gervais as having some romance, drama and satiricism..and having seen this trailer I’m hoping for a DVD release date so as I can enjoy this film in full, or like a previously mentioned Bana superhero character I may turn green and get very , very angry!
