Miss Potter (2006)

Wee Review No 2

Can’t get Bridget out of my head.

This biopic is one, for you hopeless romantics amongst you, and is named Miss Potter (2006). I watched it, as a hopelessly hopeful romantic and sobbed at the romance between the lead characters, Beatrix Potter (Bridget Jones Renée Zellweger) and her publisher Norman Warne (Ewan McGregor). At the time Zellweger was my favourite actress after seeing her as the lead in Bridget Jones’s Diary (2006), her musical turn in Chicago (2002) and Barbara Novak in the excellent Down with Love (2003). This movie also like Down with Love has McGregor as her romantic interest.

Miss Potter tells the story of early twentieth century children’s writer and illustrator Beatrix Potter of her life from 1902 when she meets her publishers for the first time. It also tells us more about Beatrix as a person and her love for her publisher Norman Warne. The cast sounded promising including Scots Ewan McGregor and Bill Patterson (Potter’s father). However sadly, I feel could have been a much better film with a British actress such as Rebecca Hall in the role, as Zellweger unfortunately was still in full tilt Bridget Jones role complete with voice and mannerisms. Anyway if you ignore that, she and McGregor continue the chemistry they showed when they co-starred in Down with Love and McGregor even gets a wee chance to sing.  Sobbing is compulsory unless you are a cynical romantic, so snuggle up to your loved one with a box of chocolates, some tissues and wallow.

  1. I love the movie. I thought it was utterly charming and we’ll made. I loved the scene where they are are trying to catch a few minutes alone in her forbidden bedroom…then they danced…briefly a d slightly touching fingertips …So lovely. I also thought It was informative about yhe times for women.

  2. I started watching this but from memory I think I was disappointed and turned it off! Can’t be sure though, so it obviously didn’t make a huge impression!
